Need help setting up wireless network

Just got a D-link DI-624 wireless router and a DWL-G520 wireless network PCI card. The wireless router is plugged into my cable modem and the card is installed properly in my main system which is in the other room. I plugged in my laptop to the router and went through the basic setup wizard in the manual.

I can get internet access on the laptop (has 802.11 built in) while it's plugged in, but not when it isn't. I can't get access on my main system either. What I need help with, is basically the steps I should go through in windows XP pro on each computer to set it up so that each can access the internet wirelessly, and also to be able to share folders on each system, when both are on. The relevant IP addresses are set up correctly, I think.

Ok, got wireless internet access on both the PC and the laptop. I just can't seem to see each computer on My Network Places. I added my computer to the workgroup HOME and shared 3 folders.

These cannot be viewed on the laptop. Similarly, I cannot view the Laptop's SharedDocs on the PC.

I can however view the shared folders if I type the IP address of each machine directly.

Hrmmm, so it's a common problem with no easy fix?

At the moment, I can currently access each computer's shared folders by typing the appropriate IP address. However, the computer shared folders don't appear under My Network Places for the other computer and vice versa. When I view the workgroup "Home", I can see each computer's name, but if I try and access it, I get the error message:

Quote:
\\Laptop is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.

The network path was not found.

I have checked that Windows firewall is disabled on both machines.

Hi Craig,

I have setup wireless networking on windows XP pro.

If you have a firewall configure it to allow workgroup networking, or if you want just disable it.

If you are using a wireless router then no home networking wizard is required. Download SP2 and run the wireless network wizard or setup your router correctly (usually http://192.168.1.1) and make sure both computers are on the same workgroup (Control panel, System INformation, Computer Name)

Hope i am helpful

undefinedHey,
that seems like a firewall issue. try disabling the software firewall on each computer
my network connections, properties, disable firewall (security protection)
you should have a firewall built in the router anyway.
