Cable Modem---- Router---- 3 different computers. i really need filesharing and printer sharing so until today i had that config... here is what is now Cable Modem hooks into computer 1.... ethernet cable out of computer 1 goes into hub slot 1 and computer number 2 is plugged into slot number 2... i didn't hook up the 3rd win98 becuase that is not manditory.. here is the problem i told winxp on computer 1 that i had a new network and to share internet.... it set it up and told me to put in the winxp disk in computer 2 (winxp too). i set up the network and i have internet fine, but nothing shows up in my network places even with folders shared... i also tried accessing the other computer but it says access denied.. can somebody help? |

Firstly see if you can ping between the two computers in both directions.
If you can, then make sure that on both computers you have accounts with the same username/password. Try typing in \\computername into the address bar in Windows Explorer to see if you get an error message (where computername is the name of the other computer). |

How can i find out the ips of the computers? I am on computer number 2 right now and when I go to Start----Control Panel-----Network connections-----Ehternet card----- Support tab, it says <unavailable> I have a question so does computer 1 and 2 have to be on the same usernames? Becuase the account on this one is named Kurt and the one on computer number 2 is named Stacy... |

Well you're not going to get much communication when the status is like that. Make sure that the DHCP server is enabled on the router, and that the NIC is set to automatically obtain it's IP address from the router. If you still don't get a good address then it probably means there's a communication problem between the router and computer. Quote:
Well don't worry about the usernames for now, but make sure that the guest account is enabled. Try to sort out the IP addresses first. |

I was looking at the wrong thing.... Here is what it says for computer 2 Address Type: Assigned By DHCP IP Address: 192.168.0.108 Subnet Mask: 225.255.255.0 Default Gateway 192.168.0.1 So i would go to run--cmd and then type in ping 192.168.0.180?? Also I have a hub not a router.... just clearing that up.... i used to have a router(i still do) i just switched to a hub so i could do filesharing and printersharing..... ok here are the results of pinging: computer 1 to 2 "Pinging 192.168.0.108 with 32 bits of data" "request timed out" (times 4) Computer 2 to 1 "Pinging 192.168.0.1 with 32 bits of data" "request timed out" (times 4) I have a question.... I am running Norton Firewall 2004 on both machines..... It said that it is configured through firewall 2004 but i wonder if it is blocking it? Thanks |

It looks like Norton is blocking it. Try disabling it for the time being and try again.

You should be able to share files and printers fine with a router or hub. It shouldn't make a difference. |

You know what.... When we switched to the hub we got infected with about 20 viruses / trojans and have been getting advertisment messages from RPC (i think ) so anyways we are going to switch back to our old router.... thanks for your help.. but i have a question you said that i could network the computers using my old router.. when i tried that awhile back ago windows xp threw a fit and said that config is unsecure and that we should invest in a hub so that is what we did could you explain how i would network with my router?? thanks very much again |

The router should be much easier to setup and isn't insecure.
There should be some sort of wizard that you run on the router to enter your Internet username and password. Once you've done that, make sure that the DHCP server is enabled on the router. Then on all the computers, make sure that the NIC is set to obtain it's IP address automatically from a DHCP server. They should then contact the router for an IP address, at which point the Internet should work. After this, check to see if you can ping between computers. If you can, then try file sharing which should work. |
