![]() Now can you try pinging between each computer. Open a command or dos prompt and type "ping 192.168.0.x" (without the quotes) replacing x with 1 then 2. Check that you can ping the other computer from both computers. |

the pc with xp can ping to both, and the pc with win 98 only can piong to .0.2

The 98 also needs to be able to ping 192.168.0.1 - the address of the XP computer. The most probable reason for this is the presence of a firewall. Check that no firewall is enabled on the XP computer (like ZoneAlarm for instance) and make sure that this is disabled or configured for home networking. Also, Windows XP includes a built-in firewall which should be disabled. Open up Network Connections from the Control Panel and right-click the network connection. Select Properties and click the Advanced tab. Make sure that Internet Connection Firewall is disabled.
