Ok from the images you posted you are missing a lot of information. What is the Workgroup that both computers are On? if you are trying to access the internet the Gateway will ahve to be set on the 98 System. Also are you sure that you have the Cross Over cable plugged into the Right NIC on the XP system as there is a NIC in there with MS Default IP Address when it cannot find a DHCP server to get an IP Address.

OK All of the network cards need to be in the same scheme, you have 192.168.0.3 , 1 or something and 169. something, this is not going to work also the subnet mask is255.255.255.0 on 2 cards and 255.255.0.0 on the other card. Why do you need 3 nic card? Is this to share out the internet? Listen, go get a cheap and when I say cheap I don't mean that literally I mean they are all in expensive, anyway get a router for your DSL or Cable connection and connect your 2 pc'c through the router and get rid of the 3rd nic card!! point both pc's to the router for your gateway and set you ISP's DNS as the DNS on both pc's. Also as Rob G is getting at you need to have both pc's in the same workgroup. Hope this helps.

You could just go and get a router, but you should be able to get this network setup OK as well.
Do what the guys have already said (workgroup and IP addresses etc.) but also check for firewalls. These can prevent communication between PCs. These include things like ZoneAlarm and some antivirus programs also include firewalls. These need to be disabled or configured for home networking. Also, XP includes a built-in firewall, Internet Connection Firewall. Check that this is disabled. Once you've set the IP addresses, can you ping from one computer to another. Open up a Command Prompt and type "ping 192.168.0.x" (without the quotes), replacing x with the correct number to make it the IP address of the other computer. Check that you get a reply. |

I guess I don't know what you mean "how do I put the gateway". Again save yourself the headache and go get a router. Disable ICS and point to the router as your gateway. Then you can share internet through the router and this will also act as a ethernet hub for your local network which eliminates the need for the crossover cable. You don't have to have a big network to use a router, just more than 1 pc using a broadband connection justifies the use of a router and routers are cheap nowadays. Anyhow, if your going to use this setup, make sure that the machine sharing the internet is your gateway on the 98 machine, do this by going to control panel, click on networking, go to the TCP/IP option for that nic select properties and set your default gateway to the XP machine there, make sure that your ISP's DNS is in the option for DNS, click ok and the machine will ask you to reboot. If this doesn't work, post a screen shot of this page so I can see what you have installed there. -DudeDomain |

I'm still really confused about what's working and what isn't. On the XP machine can you click Start, Run and type "ipconfig /all > C:\ipconfig.txt" (without the quotes). Then copy the contents from the C:\ipconfig.txt file into your next post. I think the command ipconfig should work in the 98 computer, but I don't think the redirection will work. Just open up a DOS prompt, use the ipconfig /all command, then take a screenshot and upload that. |

OK - they're all kind of confusing...
On the XP computer, you've got three NIC cards. Two are OK - the third is not needed. The "Adaptador PPP Infinitum" is presumably your Internet connection - this looks fine. The "Adaptador Ethernet Conexión de área local" looks like your local area connection. The IP address and subnet mask look good, but the DNS server looks wrong. I doubt you've setup your own DNS server, so on this connection change the DNS servers to those provided to you by your ISP - presumably 200.23.249.1 and 200.38.10.1. You've also got a third connection - "Adaptador Ethernet Conexión de área local 3". This doesn't look like it is being used so disable it. You've got two connections in there - and neither look configured correctly. I don't know which one you are using, but disable the one which you don't need and just use the one. For the one you are going to keep (the one that is actually connected to your other computer) manually set the IP address to 192.168.0.2, the subnet mask to 255.255.255.0, the default gateway to 192.168.0.1 and the DNS servers to 200.23.249.1 and 200.38.10.1. If you do all that correctly, I think you'll be on the right lines ![]() |

well... now i cant play age of empires, i think the connection im using is conexion de area local 3, but when i close the other(coneccion de area local) the internet closes, anyway the xp machine is using coneccion de area local 3 to conect to the other pc, so i guess i need to configure the win 98 with the ip and submask of this conections, can anyone tell me what to put in both pc (ip,subnetmask, dns{i dont know what is this})?

OK - if you're using the connection 3 it's setup wrongly. It has an IP address of 169.254.63.101 which is almost certainly wrong!
Here's some settings to use: XP connection 3 (disable the connection 1): IP address: 192.168.0.1 Subnet: 255.255.255.0 Default gateway: (blank) DNS servers: 200.23.249.1 and 200.38.10.1 98 computer: IP address: 192.168.0.2 Subnet: 255.255.255.0 Default gateway: 192.168.0.1 DNS Servers: 200.23.249.1 and 200.38.10.1 |

Are you logging on to the 98 machine? There has to be some for of authentication for that machine as well as the XP machine. Try logging onto the 98 machine with the same user name and password as the XP machine or create a user on the XP machine and use that user name and password to loggon to the 98 machine. Then you need to give permission to that user to what ever you are sharing on the XP machine, you do that by right clicking on the folder or object you want to share and select sharing and security. Make sure to give access rights to what ever user you are sharing the object to. Also make sure that file and print sharing is installed on the 98 machine.
As far as what edwinbrains was helping you with, you need to go back and understand what he was telling you. It is pretty straight forward. I am assuming that you understand how to make changes on your network? Most of these tasks require some knowledge of TCP/IP and basic networking. Hope this helps you.. -Dudedomain |
