Need Networking Help

Im trying to back up some files, so i put them in the networked Shared Folder, which i have done before and it worked fine, just grab em off the network with other comp. However, when i tried that here with my laptop, i realized the lappy isnt responding to the network. I cant even ping the two computers.
what do i have to do to fix this.thanks

on the laptop, check to see if it has an IP address. how are you connecting the two?
