This is a home network guys! You don't need a "server" product to have a server in your home peer to peer network.
You DO NOT need W2K server.
NT will work fine for you. I think the thing about a XP partition is someones confusion concerning a multiboot system and that NT can't read fat32. This is a local not network issue. Don't worry about it.
What you describe concerning user disk space on the server is referred to as a home folders.
It is just like creating regular folders except you give the user all rigths to their folder and take away all rights from everyone else so the folder is exclusivly that users.
