Netgear EA201 :S

Hi, sorry for bugging you guys on a first post ... but I am very frustrated with this and I can't for the life of me figure it out....
OK, I am trying to setup a 3 way wired [standard Cat-5] LAN using a Linksys 5-port hub with these computers:
my 1.7ghz Win98SE box, the network card is a Via Rhine II fast Ethernet adapter [onboard] with IP 192.168.0.1 / subnetmask 255.255.255.0,
an old 100mhz era box with Win98 and a 3com [not sure of the model] PCI 10/100 card with IP 192.168.0.1 / subnet mask 255.255.255.0
These two computers work fine together and i have no problem with any file/print sharing, video games... whatever, it works but my problem is:
a 500mhz box with Win98 and a NetGear EA201 ISA 10mbps network card... its IP is 192.168.0.2 with the same subnet mask, I cannot ping it from the other computers, and i cannot ping the other computers from it ... the IP was coming up as 0.0.0.0 in the Ipconfig command from DOS, but i cleaned out the dial-up and AOL adapters in the network setup area and it comes up as the proper IP now... But still no network :S i have been trying for a good long while and still can't get it to work so any help would be a lot of help... Thanks!

You should not have two computers with the same IP address.

ooops, sorry that was a typo, they are all different IPs [...1 ...2 ...3 as the last numbers]

Make sure you have the same network protocols installed on the machines. Are you using TCP/IP or NetBEUI? Is the network card even being found by Win98 in the machine that's not connecting? You said you're getting a 0.0.0.0 address. Could be a problem with the card itself. You could try a card from one of the working computers to test. Try that, and check the protocols.

Yep, Same protocols [TCP/IP, NetBEUI, IPX] and the network adapter for all I can tell is working properly [lights in the back come on, no yellow or red icons in the system device manager, drivers are installed properly] I tried the 3com from the other computer and that didn't work either... I have uninstalled all the protocols/drivers/setup stuff and reinstalled and still nothing...
I would take it to my favorite PC shop and let them take a look at it [had them install my 2nd hard drive and a bunch of misc stuff] but by the time i can get a ride down to the shop its closed.

Hmmmmmmmmmm... First of all, you don't even need IPX/SPX on any of the machines. No biggie, though. Are you assigning IP addresses manually or getting them from DHCP? You say you are now getting a proper IP address? Are they all on the same workgroup? Give us all the exact IP addresses and subnet mask, workgroup, etc. Weird...

The IPs were assigned manually, they are:
192.168.0.1
192.168.0.2
192.168.0.3
The second one being the problem system,
The subnet masks are all the same [ 255.255.255.0 ]
and they are all under the workgroup 'LAN' without quotations
also i have NetBEUI set as the default protocol and
Microsoft file and print sharing enable on all the protocols.

Could you cut and paste all ipconfig output for all of the machines?

Hmmmm... Can you provide the output from the command;
netstat -r

for the problem machine. Also, why are there so many Ethernet adapters listed?

i will get the 'netstat -r' output today, right now i can't access the problem computer, though.

To awnser why their are so many adapters listed:
all the computers are on a Dialup ISP and are required to have the extra Ethernet Adapter settings, Nothing much i can do about those.

I'll be interested to see that netstat output. Also, try removing all the extraneous adapter crap from the problem machine, just to see if it's messing up something. Try it temporarily. For now, I'm quite stumped, though...

i have already done that, thats how i got the IPconfig to display the IP correctly...

Try adding default GW for all machines. If you have a router it should be the IP address of the router interface on the 192.168.0.x network, though it is unclear why it should make a difference. I agree that you should get rid of all interfaces on the problem machine and try this again.

I got it over to the local computer place, they are going to look at it [though i won't hear from them until Wensday] hopefully that can fix it...
I'll post what the problem is/was if they do...
