Netgear Wireless set-up

A friend just bought a Netgear Wireless G router and laptop card. I'm in another state and would go over there and do what I could but instead am helping her set it up over the phone.

My question:
Can she set-up the router without directly connecting via ethernet from the router to the PC? Can she set it up with JUST the card?

She is supposedly getting a strong signal from the router to card ... but isn't getting an internet connection.

She uses XP. Tim Warner/Roadrunner.

She got frustrated before we could get to trying to connect to the router via explorer via the URL.

If she doesn't need another ethernet cable, I don't want her to have to drive to the store to buy one.

Thanks,
Matt

What exact brand? Netgear/D-Link usually come with excellent docs, and its a case of following the steps. Login to the router via your browser and check the settings. Can you ping the router from your laptop? Also given that she has bought it, she might be entitled to free support but don't quote me on this.

Well, I'm gonna answer, in part, my own question. I bought the same setup as her today. Both the Netgear G wireless router and the G card. Set it up on the first try on my end. No direct ethernet cable needed.

this should be the case, since (apart from the speed differences and the fact that one is wireless) the two should be pretty much the same.

Hey guys. First time user but saw Buck16's question and though you might be able to help. I have the netgear wireless also and have had a problem with getting an internet connection even though the signal is good. I set up the wireless card by just installing the software and not connection to the internet via the router. I left for vaction without testing it as I have missed placed the AC adapter for the router. Long story.
I am now away from home and I am unable to get a web page to appear so that I am unable to use the web. I am hoping that someone may be able to help me.
I will check back randomly as I am currently using a friends computer.
Thanks for the Help
Judy

Does the router have a diagnostics test? Try running that and see if you get a pass or fail.

you need to clarify your issue. Are you trying to use your wireless card to connect to a hot spot? [hot spot - open public internet wireless access point]

You aren't thinking you can connect to your home router are you?

RE: Help

RE: connection issues
I am trying to use a hot spot. The wireless card software was installed and appears to be operating OK. It appears to be connecting the hot spot signal giving me a good signal, but when I open EI the page doesn't open... no connection with the web.
I don't know how to run a diagnostic test, especially from a hot spot.
I have had other wireless cards and once everything was installed everything went great. This is the first time using this card and I really don't know where to go from here.
Thanks for getting back to me.
Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Are you manually assigning an IP address, or are you getting it automatically from the hotspot? Check that you have the correct details set (either manually or automatically) in your NIC's properties.

Got it

Hey guys thanks for the help. I did have it set up for automatic IP so I am not sure what the issue was. Managed to log on using a different hot spot this morning so I think that there must have been something wrong with the last sight.
Thanks again.
