network hell
Hello please put me out of my misery.
I have xp running on a laptop and desktop. The laptop can see but not access the desk top. The desk top gives me this errorr message when I try and look at the workgroups. Workgroup is not accessible you might not have permisson to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of the server to find out if you have access permisons. The list of servers the workgroup is not availble. I have today been to my dads set used all the same kit but his computer (desktop) and it worked fine no problems at all. I must be missing somthing on my desk top PC. I upgraded it from ME about 4 months ago. Don't know if this has anything to do with it. Anyone got any ideas ??? |

This questions seems exactly the same as Help I am having a mare with workgroups which you created yesterday. Why have you created a new topic? I've closed this one now. If you continue in the same topic for the same question we can continue where we left off.
Can you ping between the computers? |

Do you have any firewall software installed on laptop? This includes any third-party programs but also the built-in Windows XP Internet Connection Firewall. |

Are you sure? Sometimes even anti-virus software comes with firewalls that you need to disabled.
Are the computers on the same subnet (like 192.168.0.x)? Do they have their subnet mask set to 255.255.255.0? |

thanks for you help. It was my anit-viurs soft ware. Not allowing network access. I checked the help file and it says it does not intefer with netoworking. Sure enough in the settings you have to tell it to let a network be created.
Thanks. ![]() |
