network on xp
I am trying to set up a network with my desktop computer and laptop. The both share the internet with no problems, but I cannot view the shared files or see the other computer on either the laptop or the desktop.
I am using a mn-700 microsoft 4 port router. I have a cable modem via ethernet to the router. My desktop is hooked up via ethernet to the router. The laptop is hooked up via wireless to the router. I have tried several different attempts to view files that are on the opposite computer with no luck. I have file sharing enabled on both computers. Both computers are running win xp. I can send any additional info that you might need. Any advice/help is appreciated. Daniel |

There is a helpful network wizard somewhere in the XP help & support that will assist you getting the two computers to communicate.

I have ran the wizard without sucess. I found some additional information on the web. I will try its advice hopefully tomorrow night. I will post my results afterward. It has puzzled me since the router install and the internet work so well. I tried updating my computer and notebook on windows update today. A couple of the updates dealt with networking but the didn't sovle the problem either. I am sure I will get it working sometime. Thanks for the response. It is appreciated.

Some things to check:
Are both computers on the same workgroup? Are the network settings set correctly on the network adaptors? Ie: does each computer have a unique IP address like 192.168.0.1 etc, is the subnet set to 255.255.255.0. Open the Control Panel > Network Connections to check. Try typing \\computername2 into Windows Explorer of computer1. What happens? Do you get a password prompt or does it say that the computer cannot be found? HTH, Edwin |

Disable any firewall software until you have this resolved on the workstations.
Can you ping between the stations? If you do a ipconfig only the last number in the ip is different between the two??? |

I am now able to see both computers on the pc and the notebook. I am also able to view change move etc any shared files on the notebook from the pc.
I cannot view any files on the pc from the notebook. I get the following error. computer is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource contact administrator to find out if you have access permission not enough server storage is available to process this command. I am not sure how to ping. The ip address is correct on both computers only the last octet is different. |

To see if the computers can ping, click Start then Run and type "cmd" without the quotes.
Then type "ping 192.168.0.1" (without quotes), but changing it to the correct IP address. HTH, Edwin |

thanks
I tried the ping. I can ping the notebook from the pc with an avg time of 22ms. When I tried to ping the computer from the notebook I get a transmission failed error code 65. I may try to look into it some more tonight if I get time. I keep thinking it is in the settings on my computer not sharing but they all seem to be right. |

I'm not sure, but that ping time seems quite a long time to me. When I ping other computers in my network, the time is less than 1ms.

I am not sure why the longer times but I just tried and I get like 1ms each way now.

If you can ping from both computers to the other, and they are both on the same workgroup, what now happens if you type in \\computername into the address bar in Windows Explorer?
Are there shared files on both computers which can be accessed from the network. (Right-click a folder and select properties. Under the sharing tab allow the folder to be shared and allow access to it from the network). |

Thanks for the help. I done somemore research on the net and found a solution to why I could view my files on the notebook and not the other way around. I had to edit the registry to increase a page file size. Now everything is working fine. I appreciate all the help especially edwinbrains.

Below is a website with information on changing the registry setting. It isn't the site I used but I beleive it has the same directions. If you need more information or directions I can try to help but I am no registry expert. I do know to be very careful and have a backup if you aren't sure what your doing. You can also search on the net for "IRPstacksize" and probably find more information. I hope this address works I copied it directly from my browser window.
