Network Problems!?!?

I am using a linksys etherfast cable/dsl router with 8 port switch,
serial # befsr81. The back of the router has 9 slots. 1-8 are ports to hook up computers (numbered 1-8). The 9th slot says internet, which is where my ethernet cable from my cable modem is running. I configured my Main PC to communicate with the router already using the setup disk that came with the router and I even tried configuring it manually.

I am trying to set up a network with 3 computers, all computers are running XP Pro. My current configuration is as follows:
Code:
Main PC:
Connected directly to the cable modem through usb.
Also connected to port slot #3 in the back of my router.

2nd PC:
Connected to port slot #2 on the back of the router.

3rd PC:
Connected to port slot #1 on the back of the router.

I have ran the Network setup wizard on all computers. They were all set up to run on the "My computer connects through this computer or a residential gateway" connection. Firewals are disabled. Here are the connections listed in my network connections for the Main PC:
Code:
Main PC
-Local Area Connection 9 Enabled Realtek rtl8131 Family
           PCI Fast Ethernet NIC

-Local Area Connection 3 Moterola Surfboard 4200
           Enabled, Shared

Second PC
-Local Area Connection 17 Linksys LNE100TX Fast
            Ethernet Adapter Enabled, Firewalled

Third PC
           -1934 connection 11 Enabled 1934 net adapter
           -1934 connection 12 Enabled 1934 Net adapter #2
-Local Area Connection 9 Enabled NVIDIA nFors MPC
             Networking Controller

Doing it this way I can only recieve the internet on this computer. When I ping on the Main PC I get 4 reply's with 0% loss. But when I ping on the other two comptuers I get the message "Destination net unreachable". Any help would be much appreciated.

If you're using the main pc to share the Internet, rather than the router, you need to make sure that the other two computers have their default gateway configured to the IP address of the main PC.

Once you've set the IP address to the computer with the Internet, you should be able to access the Internet. If you can't try accessing http://66.102.9.104 and see if you can browse to that address. If you can, then there is a DNS problem which can be solved.

I could be way off base here, but if the modem is connected to the switch/router, there is no need to setup a shared connection. All systems SHOULD be able to access it via the switch/router once you have it setup correctly. If that is the case, you need to disconnect your main PC from the modem altogether and connect it only to the router/switch the same as all the others. This alone could solve your probelm, but if not, run the setup software for your router/switch and find the gateway info you'll need.

If you are intent on setting up the shared connection, remove the link from the modem to your switch.

Either way, one of the connections needs to go. (At least that's my way of thinking. I suspect you are confusing the modem when connecting both cables.)

Hope this helps.
