network running at wrong speed

hey guys need a quick help here from one of our local guru's.
i am helping set up a small business network (its been set up i'm actually repairing as a friend) its about 4-7 computers. they have no server it is a small lan they individually dial up to the net.
the main problem is we are running at 10 mpbs when we should be at 100 mbps. any idea of what could ask me for more info if you need any the quicker the help the more appreciated thanks all

If it doesn't pick up 100baseT automically and hardcoding 10baseT works:
1) Bad cabling
2) Cable too long

hard coding? and i am not sure, but seeing as how it was not i who did the wiring i stand by nothing to the intergrity of the job...also it wasnt a very computer proficient man who did the cabling.

none of the cables are over 15-20 feet. i do not presume that to be too long...

they have been using this network set up for the past 3 years and onlywithin the last week has things started to go Fubar, i am getting convinced that its either a dieing hub, bad cable, or virus.
what do you guys recommend?

If you believe it's the hub failure why don't you just replace it and preferably with a switch and see?

I guess Ill ask the obvious, why do you think you should be running 100Mbps? and how do you know you are running 10Mbps?

Make sure you have a 10/100 Mbps hub/switch and make sure that you have 10/100 Mbps NICs if everything can handle 100Mbps then try hard coding the NIC to 100 full.

Make sure you are running CAT5 or better cabling and that it is wired to 568B standard. (ive seen people use CAT3 phone cable hehe, that never gets over 10Mbps)

Buy a new cat5 patch cable and move the PC next to the Hub/switch and plug it in to eliminate wiring issue.

Only problem is most likely in this small of an environment you dont have a managed hub/switch which may cause issues if one end is static set and the other is auto.

this turned out to be the problem, and yeah we bought a switch/router. thanks guys.
