I'm having the same problem, and I THINK I've found the solution (will be trying it out as soon as a new cable arrives...)
I don't have the link to hand, but I found a posting on a different website that states if linking an XP Home to an XP Pro machine, you must have password authentication enabled on both machines - preferably with identical user names and passwords. Hope it works! ![]() |

hey man are you guyz just want to share the file on the the two computer? ok
Go to START>RUN then type CMD and a dos like window will pop up. Then type IPCONFIG and you should see the IP address of your machine. You can then go to START>RUN on the other pc and just type in this IP address (in the form of \\xxx.xxx.xxx.xx\ where 'x' equals whatver your IP is ofcourse) and in my experience this always connects me to the other PC. |

That only works if the connection is working already, RJ....

so the secret may be we need passowrd protection on both computers?

If you can access the internet from both systems, that positive news. It means that the Internet Connection Sharing of MC1 is working and that the ad-hoc wireless setup is communication.
All that is aside from a working network, however. Networking on MC2 is probably correctly set up, because it sees MC1. File/Printer sharing will not be in effect, though, if MC1 isn't seeing the network. Make sure that the Internet Connection Firewall is turned OFF on MC2 (MC1 is the proxy, in this instance, protecting MC2). The "permissions" blurb is a part of "can't connect" error messages even if you have the permissions, so I wouldn't worry unduly about that right now. Its possible that the TEREDO elements associated with IPv6 are lousing things up, here. You will probably have that if you have SP1 on both machines, particularly since you have wireless. It would help if you would click START, RUN, type the following into the command line, and click OK: ipconfig /all > "C:\Documents and Settings\yourUserNameHere\Desktop\test.txt" where "yourUserNameHere" is your user name. The quotes are necessary because of the spaces in "Documents and Settings". This will put your IP configuration data into a text file on the desktop; you can then copy and paste it into a post here. Do this for both machines. We'll see, we'll see :-) Regards, David |

I have same problem as paul1234 but can use IP thing
I am having the same problem as Paul1234. I can see the computers in the "View computers...workgroup" area, however I cannot access either one of them. I can, however, go to the run menu, type in their IP address and acess them. I have a laptop with wireless card and XP pro, (does not have SP1), d-link wireless b router and desktop with XP pro SP1. I would love to share files easier than using IP address everytime. I can use the internet on either computer just fine. Please help!
IPCONFIG.txt results are as follows: Computer 1 - Evan Windows IP Configuration Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection: Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.102 Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0 Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.1 Computer 2 - Laptop Windows IP Configuration Ethernet adapter Wireless Network Connection: Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.100 Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0 Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.1 Thank you for everything!, -Tah! nilesstandishII |

That appears to be the output of IPCONFIG, not IPCONFIG /ALL; it's not complete information. Be interesting to see the rest...
