Question Network Setup Wizard (XP) doesn't see Network hardware on Win 98 Machine

I had a home network set up with two machines running Win 98 using a crossover cable (a Pentium 3 and a Pentium). I recently purchased a P4 running XP (to replace the P1) and am trying to network it with the P3 (only).

I used the XP network setup wizard but when I ran it on the P3 with Win 98 installed, I ran into the following:

- I had to reboot for changes to take affect...no problem

- when the wizard started back up after reboot (continued) I got an error "wizard cannot finish setup because it cannot find any network hardware"

Any ideas? Is it a compatability issue? Will this work or do I just need to use a router instead?

Well using a router would be the best option if you are sharing an internet connection, if not just a network hub will work. This will eliminate the cross over cable.

Can you see the 98 machine from the XP machine, ping or network neighborhood? Also make sure that the file and print sharing is installed on the 98 machine. Try to ping each computer and let me know what you get. Also remember to manually st the workgroup on each pc to the same workgroup and make sure that the ip addresses are in the same scheme ie 192.168.0.1, 192.168.0.2.. What are you using for name resolution (DNS)? You can use on of the pc's, suggest using the XP machine.

If you open up the Device Manager in the Windows 98 machine, can you see the network adapter? Is it properly installed and configured correctly?

btw...DudeDomain - you like your routers don't you?

I just think that for the most part this solves a lot of issues that are not real issues. I hate cross over cables and ICS!! hehe.
