Network speeds?
I currently have a small network setup as follows:
10/100BaseT ethernet router. 2 machines with onboard gigabit lan controllers, running winxp pro. standard cat5 cable. I've recently been wondering why the maximum file transfer rate acheivable is around 5mb/s And how could i gain higher transfer rates? Any links or info is apperciated. Thanks in advance. |

Sounds like you are running only at 10mb. You should be able to do 100mb. Set the lan interfaces on the two pcs to 100mb and full duplex. Reboot and see if you get better speed.

I think they are both set.
In windows the connection icons says "connected at 400.0Mbps" |

They were both on autoselect, ive manually set em to 100mb/full
Still the same 5mb/s transfer, any ideas? |

You can only connect at the highest supported speed of the slowest device. Since the router can at max support 100mbps it would appear to me that your gigabit builtin nic does not support 10/100/1000 but only 1000. You can not run at 400mbps to a 100mbps connection. This would explain the 5mbps since the traffic is consumed with resends due to crc errors.
Perhaps this interface is gigabit only or you need a updated driver. Otherwise you need to install a 100mb interface. |

The lan controllers do support 10/100/1000.
The network bridge that windows has created states 400mb/s |

what network bridge? you only mention one card in each machine. bridge is where you want to route between two nics and two ip segments.
bridging doesn't have anything to do with anything if you only have one nic/one patch cable. |
