networking 2 comp, W2K & XP

My two computers are networked together with a crossover cable. I have no problems as far as sharing files but on my xp I cannot get access to the internet. ( the 2000 is connected by modem to the internet.) I have looked through the networking forums here and cannot figure out what I am doing wrong. Not long ago the connection was working and I must have done something to screw it up. I think when I originally set it up I used one of the wizards but I have had no success using it now. Any suggestions are much appreciated.

First thing to check is that the connection is shared on the 2000 computer. You need to make sure that Internet Connection Sharing is enabled. Secondly, you need to make sure that on the XP computer the default gateway is set correctly. Open up Network Connections from the Control Panel and select the Local Area Connection. Right-click it and select Properties. Double click Internet Protocol TCP/IP and make sure that the field for the default gateway is set to the IP address of the 2000 computer.

If it still doesn't work, can you access http://64.233.161.104 ? If you can, then it's a DNS issue. You need to go to your ISP website and look for the IP addresses of their DNS servers. Once you've found this (there should probably be two) you need to go back to the screen where you entered the default gateway (see above) and enter in the addresses of the two DNS servers below that.

HTH,

Edwin

Internet connection sharing is enabled but when I go in network connections/local area connection/double click tcp/ip the settings are 'Obtain IP address automatically' on both machines.
Guess I need to know what to put in the 'Use the following IP address', 'Subnet mask', 'Default gateway', areas and then I must have to put something in under the "Use the following DNS server addresses' preferred and alternate? Sorry for being a dunce

Hey - everyone has to learn somewhere

Anyway, this should work:

computer 1 (with Internet connection) - 2000
IP address: 192.168.0.1
subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
default gateway (blank)

computer 2 - XP
IP address: 192.168.0.2
subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
default gateway: 192.168.0.1

Then, on both machines you need to enter the DNS servers manually. For the address to enter, you need to check out what it says on your ISPs website.

Thumbs up Success!

Thank you so much, I had to get the DNS server from my ISP (which they said I didn't need) and it worked. I recommend this forum for help for anyone!
