Angry Networking a windows 98 and a XP PC.

Iam trying 2 network my two PCs together, one running 98 and the other XP.
i have made up X-over cables and tested the continuity if the wires and the x-over, they all work fine, aswell all the pins on the NIC are good.

iam using a Realtek RTL8139/810X family PCI Fast Ethernet NIC in each computer.

i have set up there ip address at 192.168.0.1 and the other 192.168.0.2 and the subnet mask: 255.255.255.0.

But i keep getting a error "A network cable is unplugged" ?
i also tried to ping the IP address, the XP computer sees the 98 but the 98 does not see the XP computer, some times it is around the other way, or both computers dont see each other.
on my XP machine after typing "ipconfig" in Command Prompt it says that the ethernet card is 'media disconnected'?

please help me!

cheers, KyLe

try buying a cross over cable. maybe that is the problem with it. you also need to be in the same workgroup.

Hi
I am searching for ideas to solve my networking problems.
What I say may not help, but it may.
If I connect my two PCs with a "proper" crossover cable, or if I connect both of them into ethernet ports of my ADSL gateway, everything works OK, internet access and local workgroup sharing.
When I connect my laptop wireless to the gateway (the gateway has an integral AP), I get similar problems to yours. Internet access works from both PC, but not local network. I can ping from the laptop (XP Pro) to the desktop (XP Home), but not the other way round. But sometimes it works. Also, even from the laptop, only ping with IP address works, not with computer name. There is no reconciliation of computer names with IP addresses.

Joe

PS let us know how you solved your problem.

I would have to say in the laptop case that a firewall might be in use on the wireless connection?

Hello,

The actual problem in 98 & xp connectivity may be in the cable or the connector. Just checkout our connector as u said ur cable is ok.
Only the improper connection is the source of the trouble. Try connecting the pc's properly and m sure the problem will be resolved.

Are you using the newest driver for your nic cards? If they are connecting even sometimes it sounds like you may need a driver update, usually the link state keep alive and connection handshake are a function of the driver. This seems to be intermittent on your computers.

You need to update your ndis file download the newest driver and run setup -s this will replace the ndis driver that comes with windows with the one from realtek. Here is the readme right from setup.txt for your card.

If the Operating System's Found New Hardware Wizard prompts you that
"New Hardware Found" for the "Ethernet Controller", you should click
"Next" until "Finish" is clicked and without specifying location of
the driver. You will see the "Ethernet Controller" in the Device
Manager.

2. Then you can install or upgrade the NDIS driver with "setup" or
"setup -s" command:
a) setup: The InstallShield will prompt you the steps to install
or upgrade the driver.

b) setup -s: The InstallShield will complete the installation or
upgrade without prompting you any instruction.

You should start your own thread. But on the XP computer go to my network places right click go to properties on your network connection right click go to properties advanced tab and enable internet connection sharing.

after you turn on internet connection sharing at the bottom of the advanced tab you will see Network setup wizard click on that and it will take you from there
