Networking a windows 98 machine with an XP
Hi, I have DSL and Im trying to set up a network with my wireless laptop which is running XP and my main PC that is running windows 98. Right now, I am able to surf the net wirelessly on the laptop but I have not figured out how to share files (particularly to share a printer).
My question is, how do i set up my main win 98 machine to work with the XP laptop and share files/apps? Thanks |

The best I can tell you is...if you have your Win XP Disk you put it in your Win 98 machine. A setup window appears and one of the options is to run the networking setup wizard. that is the best I can tell ya. I havent tried it but have had to do it on another setup just like yours and have had success with it

Thanks. Unfortunatly, my laptop that is running XP was issued to me by my college. All the software was preloaded and I do not have the disks.
Thanks again |

What you have to do is on your 98 machine
=>right click network neighbourhood and click properties =>under the configuration tab, click on the file and print sharing =>then add a checkmark to the "allow access to my files" =>click accept then reboot. From then on, whatever you share will be part of the network. ![]() -James Jonah Jameson- |

Perhaps a new thread would have been more appropiate...
Anyway, the answer depends on how many computers you have. If you have two computers, you can connect them directly plugging in a crossover cable between the network cards in both computers. You won't need a hub or switch. However, if you have more than 2 computers you'll need a hub or switch. Connect each computer with a normal (not crossover) cable to the hub. Some things which may help with your connection issues: Are there any firewalls running (like Internet Connection Firewall or ZoneAlarm etc.) Disable these as they may be preventing network access. Are the computers both on the same workgroup - like MSHOME? Are the IP addresses set correctly? On the first computer, set an IP address like 192.168.0.2 with a subnet of 255.255.255.0. On the second computer set an IP address of 192.168.0.3 with a subnet again of 255.255.255.0. Can you ping from one computer to the other. Click Start, Run and type cmd. In the Command Prompt type "ping 192.168.0.x" (without the quotes), replacing x with a number, probably either 2 or 3. Also check this on the second computer. Have you connected the computers together correctly (see the first paragraph)? If it still doesn't work, on each computer click Start, Run and type "ipconfig /all > C:\ipconfig.txt" (without the quotes). Do this on both computers then copy the contents from the two ipconfig.txt files into your next post. |

^ what he said. Also please do not be tempted to run the M$ newtworking wizard because for some reason known only to the denizens of Seattle it will set up a network bridge, which IMHO is seldom needed or desired. |

Another thing about the network setup wizard - the computers will be set to use automatically obtained IP addresses from the computer with the Internet connection which will act as the DHCP server. If one computer boots up when the DHCP server is not on, then it won't be able to get an IP address so could well be inaccessible from the network.
