Networking Problem

I have recently networked two computers together. One running xp the other win98. (named TERM1 and TERM2) I have a ethernet hub with cat 5 cables. When I click on "network neighborhood" or "My network places" on each machine, the only computer icon that shows is the one for the computer I am sitting at.

(TERM1 shows only TERM1 icon) and vice versa.

What Have I done wrong???

It's hard telling. What exactly did you do software-wise to get them connected? Put them both in the same workgroup? Change IP addresses so they're on the same subnet?

It sounds like you are just starting out. You may want to consider doing some reading on the net about how to setup a windows network, or there is a good book from the Sam's series called Teach Yourself Networking in 24hrs. It will get you setup.

For a beginner, try using the xp network setup wizard. It should get your config correct. Just follow the instructions.

Troubleshoot:

1. Make sure they are in the same workgroup.
2. Make sure they are on the same subnet.
3. Test the cable.
4. Make sure you can ping by IP address.
5. Can you ping by hostname?
6. Be advised: Windows 98 is NOTORIOUS for not seeing NT based PC's in just a workgroup. This is somewhat common and normal, unfortunately. One thin you can try to do is to bisable "Master Browser" on the 98 machine so it does not even try to win an election between the two computers. Once the XP machine finds it, it will probably never let go and they will see each other.
7. Just because they don't see eac other does NOT mean they are not networked. Try to ping. If you can do that, then you are networked. Try using command prompt on 98: net use \\whatever.
