Unhappy Networking Windows XP Pro

I've been having simmilar problems with trying to network winxp Pro, from what I have read here.

Everything has been working fine until i replaced my hard drive on one of my computers. Both PC's are running XP Pro.

I can ping the Nic on both pc's.
I can ping the router on both pc's
I can ping my cable modem on both pc's.
I can get out on the net on both pc's.

pc 1
host name zipper
node type unknown (never had an issue in the past on this)
IP Address 192.168.1.102
Subnet 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway 192.168.1.1
DNS server pointing to my IP Providers DNS servers

pc 2
hose name is seesill
IP address 192.168.1.101
rest of the info is the same.

I've enabled NetBIOS over tcp/ip.
I also have client for MS network and file and printer sharing for ms network installed.
workgroup is HOME on both machines
guest accounts are enabled, and I do share the same login info on both machines.

No firewalls installed, no antivirus, and XP firewall is disabled.
I've went to a clean install on both machines tonight and have ntfs partitions on both machines.

the problem i'm running into is depending on which machine boots up first, can see the other pc, but cannot access it. I get the [computer name] not accessible. You might not have permission... The other pc gets this error when attempting to access the workgroup.

I've tried different cables (cat 5 is currently being used), even tried a different router, with no luck. I've checked to see is the computer browser service is running and they are on both machines. I've checked various local policies with no success.

So I can get out on the net, ping the nic card, ping the router on each pc, depending on which pc boots first is the one i can see the other pc but cannot access, while the other cannot access the workgroup. I'm all out of ideas right now. I've tried with and without winxp updates. Same with drivers for the nic.

Any suggestions would be great. I'm pulling my hair out. I've also tried to use IPx and that did not go well either. I cannot gain access between the pc's.

Thanks in advance
steve

I can't really think of anything you haven't tried except for running the XP Network Setup Wizard. You seem to have checked every other setting and it seems correct. Just run the wizard and you never know what it might do to help.

Do a couple of things here.

1. Make sure that you do not have TCP/IP filtering enabled, its in the properties of the TCP/IP setting for you network, last tab go advanced.

2. Change the name of your workgroup, try myhome or something.

3. You could setup one of your pc's as a DNS server and put it in the DNS search order.

adapter conflict

Check all your adapters' tcp/ip settings, make sure that none of them share the same subnet. If they do, you wil not be able to browse network resources with the affected computer. I can duplicate this error by setting my NSC PCI adapter TDP/IP subnet to the same subnet as my Wireless adapter. A similar problem occurs if the subnet of a VPN adapter is the same as teh local network adapter's subnet---the VPN WILL NOT work.
