Newbie on Broadband
All
I am just about to purchase broadband (found a supplier who will give me a ststic IP) unfortunately they do not provide the modem , so i have decided to purchase an adsl wireless router/modem as i have multiple pc's sharing the same connection. I also want to host my own eccommerce package from one of my pc's. 1./My question is will the new router prevent outside access to my web server. 2.Will the router need to be assigned the static ip i receive from my broadband supplier or will i assign that to my dns / web server. thanks in advance ![]() |

1. The router will have an web based admin interface where you'll be able to set up port forwarding. For example, you'll be able to configure it to forward all external requests for port 80 to your internal web server.
2. You router will have two interfaces. First, it'll have the external one with your static IP address. Secondly, it'll have an internal one, probably something like 192.168.0.1. You internal servers will want static IP addresses like 192.168.0.x. Then, you will set up port forwarding on your router (see above) so it appears from the Internet that the web server is running on the external IP itself. |
