If you want to know how to make your own, then I'm not sure, but the following programs say that they work with Linux:

Akeni LAN Messenger 1.01 - http://www.newfreeware.com/utils/1056/

LAN Spirit 1.5.8.229 - http://www.newfreeware.com/internet/794/

At my office we use Gaim, if you do not want everyone to know you are online, create a new ICQ/MSN/AIM to connect to just for your office.

I have not tried or looked for anything else as Gaim has worked out nicely for us.
