Please help me

I am trying to set up a wireless network between 2 computers. After installing the software I get a icon at the bottom to say that I am connected on both computers and that the signal is strong, but when I ping each computer the result is that they are not talking to each other

Hi,

Some things to check on each computer:

Are the computers on the same workgroup?

Is the TCP/IP network protocol installed on both computers?

Are the IP addresses set correctly?
Eg: computer 1 IP:192.168.0.1
subnet: 255.255.255.0

computer 2 IP: 192.168.0.2
subnet: 255.255.255.0

Is there any firewall software running (such as ZoneAlarm or ICF)?

Setting all of these settings correctly should enable you to network between the two computers. If it doesn't work, why don't you try running the XP network setup wizard (Start > All Programs > Accessories > Communications > Network Setup Wizard).

HTH,

Edwin

When I tried the setup on the computer that connects to the internet it goes through the steps but then says it "cannot complete the network setup wizard". on this system I am running xp pro.

If it doesn't work on the computer which is sharing the Internet, open Network Connections from the control panel and do it manually. Right-click the Local Area Connection and click Properties. Double click Internet Protocol TCP/IP and set the IP address at 192.168.0.1 and the subnet at 255.255.255.0. Leave the default gateway blank. Then, still in Network Connections, right-click the Internet connection, select properties and under the advanced tab, enable Internet Connection Sharing. If the second computer is set up ok, with the default gateway set to 192.168.0.1, it should be able to access the Internet.

Thankyou for helping. I have tried what you said but this does not seem to work. The second computer now does not want to connect to the network. When I click on the icon it comes up with an error message saying "Error Disabling Connection" even though it is not connected, and I am not getting any signal to say that I am. In all my years of messing with computers I have never had a problem like this.

On each computer can you click Start then Run and enter cmd. In the Command prompt, type "ipconfig /all > C:\ipconfig.txt" (without the quotes) and copy the contents from ipconfig.txt into your next post.

For both of these computers, the Local Area Connection status is "media disconnected". Check that the cables are plugged in and the router / hub is turned on. In Network Connections in control panel, there will probably be a little red cross next to each lan connection. You need to get rid of this cross.

When I do this the icons at the bottom of the taskbar disappear like they do when I disconnect from the internet. To me this is disconnecting the network cards. I have checked the cards and they are seated proper and the LED's are on. The icons seem to be working in reverse!!

I'm not entirely sure if this is the same as wired connections, but on each computer open up Network Connections, right-click the LAN connection and select properties. Tick the button to "show icon in notification area when connected". Now make sure that the necessary hardware / cables are plugged in, and the icon should still be in the bottom of the screen. Then do ipconfig /all again and post them in your next post. The "media disconnected" part should be missing!

Both computers are still registering as "media disconnected". Like this, each computer does not have an Ip address for the network, so will not be able to communicate. I have never used a wireless connection before, so I'm not entirely sure how the media can be disconnected.

What software did you install to set up your wireless connection? Did it come with any diagnostic tools, to check the hardware and connection? If you double click the wireless connection in network connections in the control panel, what happens? If you go to System, Hardware, Device Manager and select the properties of the wireless network card, does it give any useful info? Does it say if they are working OK?

The cards I bought together, and installed the drivers that came with the cards. The software that came with the cards is called Am772.cfg, when I open that I get various optionsasking me to connect to available networks. Sometimes something is in this box sometimes not when I connect I get an icon saying that I am connected and the signal is strong but I still can't do anything. When I click on the 2 computer icon at the bottom of the screen it comes up with a box "Connect to Wireless Network" saying the following networks are available. The box is shaded in except for the following sentence "If you are having difficult connecting to a network, click advanced" but the button is shaded in. When I restart my computer I get an error message saying that the network setup as been reset. I can't open System in my control panel because since I have been trying to set this up it won't let me.
All this is just on the 1st computer. Help please I am going out of my mind.

Wireless networking

Before we proceed to go into further troubleshooting...

Does your wireless network consists of wireless access point (AP) or router?

Are you setting up the wireless network via infrastructure or adhoc mode?

Since you have installed the cards' (btw PCMCIA? USB adapters?) drivers, did you configure their channel and network type (infrastructure/adhoc) etc?

Have you installed/configured cards' WLAN utility monitor software?

Using dynamic IP address via DHCP of router or static IP address?

Need more info.

Sorry to Hijack this thread but I'm having the exact same problem as the guy above, with the seemingly same hardware so if you would be so kind, and I can answer your questions could you help me too as I have a feeling doing that will solve both problems..

My wireless network consists of (and excuse me if I don't use the technical terms as I'm new to networking) A wireless PCI network card (as the guys above) in one computer... and a USB wireless adaptor in the other (as its PCI bus couldn't handle (or so it seemed the PCI wireless adaptor). No router. Just those devices. I'm trying to get the two computers networked to share a USB DSL modem.

I am not sure the difference (or which I should be using incidently) between via infrastructure or adhoc mode... any help differentating the two or which I should be using would be most appreciated.

I think i've tryed to twice.. I'm just not sure, what I'm supposed to be doing is all. I'm unsure as to how I get them to both share the same channel... and well see each other.

I have installed WLAN utitlity software, it did it automatically as I was installing the drivers... having that confuses me too though, as I'm unsure what to use to configure the network. The
