What operating system?
Are you sure the crossover cable is working? Do you happen to have a $10 hub laying around? Do an ipconfig (Windows)/ ifconfig (Linux). What is the results? |

Try adding each machine to the same workgroup and adding a similar default gateway. Once you have done that, do a net view and a ping.

How did you set up your connection? Did you go through the MS Wizard to create a direct connection? What OS Version are you using? Using this wizard you can set up the guest and the host machines.

Can I ask the obvious question? Do you have a link light on both computers? You may have to set the speed / duplex manually to be identical.
