Ports 135, 5000, 1025.
OS: XP pro sp1
I scanned myself (nmap) and noticed I have these ports open: 135/tcp msrpc 1025/tcp NFS-or-IIS 5000/tcp UPnP I do not want to share anything to anyone on my network. and I do not care for UPnP, how do I close these ports? Any way besides a firewall (turning the processes off, are they needed)? |

Well, your port 135 is the one that Blaster went after, so you should be sure your machine is not vulnerable. Universal plug -n- pray is also a problematic port, there are some serious security vulnerabilities. Go here www.grc.com and you can scan and find out about the different ports, vulnerabilities, etc.
You could turn off the services, but you may run into situations where you may need it. The only one I'm not familiar with is port 1025. Why not use a firewall? It does a much better job of securing you computer than just turning off services. Free firewall www.zonelabs.com |

I use Outpost.
I am trying to close down all services I do not need and was just wondering if those were possible to close without a firewall (which services). Thanks. |

The GRC site has several freeware tools that will close the different services/ports for you.

Just ask anyone, the built in firewall that comes w XP is the lamest thing they added to XP...
so for those who wish to apply a serious solution, please follow the instructions i previously posted... and advice to those using XP's built in firewall... disable it and get urself some other protection that is configurable... good luck,... Swpnclr |

XP firewall is not brilliant, but it's not too bad as a free solution. Anyway, this thread is really old now... the original question was posted in October 2003.
