Problem...Cannot connect to the internet
Hey everyone, your help here would be appreciated...I'll give you my problem now...
On my laptop(wireless) and all of a sudden it lost it's connection to the internet, i didn't think much of it and thought it would resolve itself after awhile and used my computer. After a week my computer had the same problem, the internet did not work all of a sudden. I type "ipconfig /all" and see that its giving me a bad ip address: 169.blah.blah.blah for both my computer and my laptop. I have been trying to fix this for 3 hours searching on google and came across these forums, I hope you guys can help me - I'm on my brothers computer right now which is working. |

That address you are being given is an APIPA address which is a microsoft deals if the NIC cant get an ip address from the dhcp server it will check every few seconds for a dhcp server and when / if it finds one it will change its address if not it will use the APIPA address to comunicate with other devices on the network. your problem is that your DHCP server most likely on your router is broke. assign statics if you know what the settings should be but I think your router prolly whent bye bye.

if the computer you are on is going through that router using wireless and the other computer are connected by cables look and make sure you have a link light on the ports, make sure the interface is enabled. to configure it static on the computer you are on do a ipconfig /all and then go to one of the hard wired PCs and add that information DNS, degault gateway etc, make sure when putting the ip address in you use a different number in the last field so if you have 192.168.1.100 on your laptop now put in 192.168.1.200 on the other pc everything elase should be the same. if it is win 98 right click on network neighborhood and click on properties then scroll down to tcp/ip and double click on it and thats where you put the info, on xp goto network connections, local lan, right click, properties, and double click on tcp/ip

Ok I will try that, although I have tried that before. Umm... My laptop is wirelessly connected to the same router as the computer I'm typing on right now so I don't understand why it wouldn't work. My other computer is connected through a wired connection though and I will try what you said...any other solutions to the problem? Toshiba has a program that tells you what you can do to fix the problem it said some things and one of them was to make sure the DHCP is working properly...I don't know how to make it work properly though.

reboot the computer, and type ipconfig see if you have an ip address. if not then make sure ip is installed and set for dhcp
