Problem establishing LAN connection between 2 comps. next to each other (ironically)

hi, i'm new! I need some help wit my pc *given*

Basically I am trying to get them to network together. I've installed PCI slots, i've got a crossover cable, they are connected, but for some reason they dont seem to see each other. Both are sending info. but neither are recieving. I've no idea whats going on.

I have Windows XP on both comps.

Also for some reason one of them no longer seems to realise it has a CD-rom or DVD Drive???

Cheers, Jack

Have you run the network setup wizard on both computers. Please give some more infomation as to what you've attempted to get it working. Also run "ipconfig /all" w/o quotes from the command prompt (run -> cmd) on both computers and post the results. Then we'll be able to help.
With respect to the cd rom etc, does the bios detect them on start-up? And if you open device manager from control panel -> system; are the optical drives noted there? Or is there a yellow question mark?

It would seem that it searches for the CD drive but I don't think it is recognising them. Do you think I should install some CD drivers or summat cause this has got me hyper confused man.

Also I took your advice + looked in device manager however there doesn't seem to be and cd drive there or any question marks??? Thanks for replying, jack

I'l come back to your problem once i've read through it properly but it looks like you've bridged 2 network adapter together.
As i said before, what did you do to set up the network between the two computers? Did you run the network setup wizard, or tick any boxes. What have you tried to fix it?

Right, somehow you've bridged two network adapters. It often happens when you run the network setup wizard and follow the windoze "reccommended" path throught the wizard.
You didn't print the ipconfig for both computers so i can only work with the computer that connects to the internet.
Open up the network connections window from ctrl panel. You should have four connections. Your broadband modem, local area connection 1, 2 and network bridge. Right click on local area connection 1 and click "remove from bridge". Do the same on local area connection 2. Then right click on the bridge and click delete.
Then run ipconfig /all on both computers and post it.

When you post the ipconfigs can you also explain what you have tried to do to network them. Have you removed the bridge?

sorry

1. Yes I have removed the bridge
2. I have changed some of the names around - sorry, but it made it easier for me when I was messing around with all the settings
3.ipconfig /all doesn't seem to be running on the second pc. (ill try and get that working now)
4. When I sorted the network out for as it is now I just used the networking wizard - I can't remember ticking any boxes

Thanks a lot.

Reboot the computer and try again.

Try runing the network setup on the first computer with the computers connected. When you get to the your computer has multiple connections part, select "let me choose the conections to my network". Then on the select connections to bridge page, untick all boxes except the local area connection which the lead is plugged into. Then continus. Do this on the other cpmputer if it has more than one network adapter. Then if it still doesn't work re-post the ipconfigs.

Sorry i've already done that many times + it doesn't seem to work. (The ip config will still be the same i think). Do you know anything about why i cannot run ipconfig/all in cmd on the second computer? I just don't understand!

Cheers, Jack
