Problem with working network

I have set up a network with two machines running windows 98 using a crossover cable. One machine is a Dell 733mhz and the other has a 166mhz processor. I can see the files on the 166 machine from the Dell but when I try to copy them over all the text files copy ok but anything else starts and then stops with the following message.
"the specified network device is no longer available."
Does anyone have any idea why this is happening.
