problems networking 2k to 98

Make sure that you don't have any firewalls running. Configure the NICs manually, so that one computer has the IP address 192.168.0.1 and the other has 192.168.0.2. Give both NICs a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0. Then, before going any further, check that you can ping between the two computers. Open a Command Prompt (or MS-DOS Prompt in 98) and type ping xxx.xxx.xx.xxx (replacing that with the actual IP address of the other computer).

I appear to be able to ping between the two computers. This is what i got:
Pinging 192.168.0.2 with 32 bytes of data: Reply from 192.168.0.2: bytes=32 time<10ms TTL=128 Reply from 192.168.0.2: bytes=32 time<10ms TTL=128 Reply from 192.168.0.2: bytes=32 time<10ms TTL=128 Reply from 192.168.0.2: bytes=32 time<10ms TTL=128 Ping statistics for 192.168.0.2: Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 <0% loss> Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds: Minimum = 0ms, Maximum = 0ms, Average = 0ms This was the same for both computers apart from the i.p adress of course. So where do i go from here? |

Well if you can ping, that is a good sign. Now make sure that on both computers you are using a user account with exactly the same username/password. Then make sure that file/printer sharing is enabled on both, share a printer on one computer, then from the other computer type \\computername into the Address Bar in Windows Explorer (changing computername to the name of the other computer). See if you can see the shared folder.

On my 2k i can see the 98's shared folder but i cant see the 2k's shared folder from my 98. Also when i press "back up" from the shared folder i dont see the 98 in the "computers near me" folder.
p.s all this help is very very very much appreciated. |

So on your 98 computer, if you type \\computername (where computername is the name of the 2000 computer), what happens? Do you get an error message, or does it work but just doesn't show any shared folders? |

The error message reads:
Cannot find the file or item "LCOMP". Make sure the path and file name are correct. Type 'go <search text>' to use AutoSearch. "LCOMP" being the name of my 2k. (I have checked to make sure that the name is correct) |

I find it strange that you can ping the computer but yet get this error message when accessing the Windows 2000 computer. Create new accounts on both computers which have both exactly the same username and password, then try accessing the computer again.

When you say create new accounts do you mean network accounts or main user accounts. if it is user accounts then they both have the same user name with the same password ( which is nothing). If I have to create a new main account does it involve loosing everything on my current accounts? Also I am able to play lan games between the two computers. Also how can i set up a shared internet connection between the 98 and 2k, but so that one doesn't need the other turned on on to connect.( 56k modem) |
