Problems Setting Up Wireless in Win98SE
I have bought a wireless card for my computer and installed it onto the machine with all necessary drivers. The icons in the Windows 98 system tray shows that the connection speed is good; however, no actual connection is present -- all my applications (Web browsers, FTP, Antivirus updaters) refuse to detect any connection on my machine. Do I need a special configuration in the Networking Setup or any additional software?

Your question is all wireless. there is no individual name, no hardware configuration, no network configuration, no application name, no PC name, hence no actuality. As for general wireless network?

sorry. i just didn't realize it was of critical importance, this is my first time when i use wireless (i used dial-up before). I have D-Link AirPlus G DWL -G510 Wireless PCI card. I have installed the drivers for it that came with it on a CD and it seems to be fine -- the above mentioned device is recognized in the device manager; the program that came with the card shows that the connection strength is good to excellent. however, i cannot get any of my applications to work online. whenever i start my Internet Explorer or Opera and type in the address, it can't connect. The same with FAR Manager FTP Plugin, Check&Get Bookmark Manager, Kaspersky Antivirus Updater -- they do not detect any Internet connection on my machine.
The card is indicated in the network configuration under all available protocols (TCP/IP, IPX, NetBIOS, ...). I changed the settings in various ways but it did not help, plus I have little experience in networking, especially wireless. I have a Compaq Presario S7300CL 2.8GHz RAM512M HDD120G, Windows 98 SE. |

like i said, i have actually never dealt with networking and i can hardly figure out what a router is. what is DHCP and how do i turn it on? all that i could find among the settings was Network Settings in the Control Panel. There is TCP/IP installed for the card, and i looked at the Properties, it says "Obtain the IP address automatically" like the help page recommended ( http://wireless.nova.edu/help/Win95.php ). It also had a radio button "Use DHCP for WINS resolution" and I checked it.
how can i check if the card is getting an IP address? sorry for being so inexperienced ![]() |

pinging the above mentioned address did not work though -- it said the specified address was invalid.

(^^;?(I got it.)
By the way, your NIC is not yet installed correctly though I don't know why it says connection speed is good. Describe your PC spec. and its environs as far as you can. Anyways, you must begin with installing wierless NIC again. Have you looked at device manager? If possible, write down here your wireless adapter's installation manual. |

i have a Compaq Presario Desktop 2.8 GHz RAM512M HDD120G WINXP-SP1 (NT 5.1.2600) + WIN98SE (WIN 4.10.2222).
i have two network cards -- Realtek Ethernet Card and D-Link Wireless Card. In the Device Manager both are listed as properly installed and working, same as in Networking settings (protocols). i tried to upload the manual but it was a bit more than 2 M (.PDF format) and was rejected. i tried to archive it via WinRAR and split it into two volmues, but it said it did not allow .RAR extension. anyway, all it says about Win9x is to ping the IP and it always says "host unreachable". |

Perhaps I am missing something but I see no mention of a wireless access point or router. Nor do I see any mention of cable or dsl.
It appears you purchased a wireless card expecting it to magically connect you to the internet. It works like this: DSL/cable -->wireless router-->wireless card Appears you are missing some parts which explains why you have no ip address and no connection. I am sorry I have to tell you this :-( |
