I have disabled the firewalls on both but no luck, i have recreated the home network thing on the desktop but nothing they both are on the same subnet....dont think it is relevant but the laptop connects to the network via a wireless link but that cant be the prob cus other wired puters can access the laptop.... so i am confused.... can anyone help me...... would really appreciate any suggestions.. cheers RF |

Here we go again
Right, first things first - check the IP addresses. On each computer, set the IP address like 192.168.0.x. I can't remember if you have a router or not. If you do, it'll have the IP address 192.168.0.1, otherwise set the computer with the Internet connection to the IP address 192.168.0.1. Then, make sure that all computers have the subnet as 255.255.255.0. Also, set the default gateway field to the IP address of the router or the computer with the Internet connection (probably 192.168.0.1). After this, double check that there are no firewalls installed. These include ZoneAlarm and Internet Connection Firewall (built-in to Windows XP). Open up the properties for the lan connection and click the Advanced tab to check. Make sure that the computers have good computer names and that they all belong to the same workgroup. Double check that all network cables are plugged in and that any wireless connections have a good reception. Then try pinging from one computer to another. From each computer, try pinging every other computer in the network and see what it can see. Hopefully everything can see everything. You should then be networked again. If you're not, perhaps I could look at the ipconfig for each machine. I can't remember if I've told you to do this before, but just in case, click Start, Run and type "ipconfig /all > C:\ipconfig.txt" (without the quotes). Do this on the desktop, laptop and one computer which is working fine, then copy the contents from the ipconfig.txt files into your post. HTH, Edwin |

Those ipconfig files look pretty good.
Quote:
That pretty much shows you that you have good IP address etc. or you'd never be able to ping between the computers. I wouldn't worry too much about not being able to ping Laptop - this is just a DNS issue which shouldn't stop your computers communicating. From your first thread: Quote:
What exactly is the problem you are having? Since they can ping OK, I would have thought they would communicate OK! What do you mean by "talk"? If you type in \\192.168.0.25 (the IP address of the Laptop) into the desktop do you get to see the shared files and folders that the laptop has shared on it? |

When you get home and try it again, would you also be able to give me details of the error message (that's presuming it doesn't work suddenly
)?I may be able to help a bit better if I know that the error says more than "cat access" !! ![]() |
