Question Recommedation for Firewall Router?
I want to replace the USB ADSL modem (that's coming with
our Broadband package next week) with a decent Firewall
Router that I can hook directly into our Ethernet LAN and
use as our internet gateway.


Anyone have any recommendations for a suitable model?

You won't be able to actually replace the USB modem with just a router. You need to get a Ethernet modem to replace the USB one and then you can buy a firewall/router.

Yes, but cant you get an ethernet modem which has
some built-in firewall protection?

If it is an efficient networks modem, most of them also have an RJ-45 port. Then you can just use it as a bridge and get a firewall/router/switch. I've been using the SMC 7004 series with several clients and I really like it.

I do this kind of setup all the time:
Network -> SMC Router -> DSL modem -> Internet

The firewall in the smc is very secure, and with the router you can do port forwarding for remote access, webservers, vpn's, etc. It also won't break your wallet, generally less than $80 depending on the model.

If this won't work for you there are several models from efficient networks that have firewall capabilities. I'm not sure of the model numbers, but you could look on their website.

I see the Netgear DG834 ADSL Firewall Router
is basically an "all-in-one" device. Would this do IYO?

There really isn't any way for us to know. One funny thing about dsl is that different providers setup the dsl circuit in a different way. Which generally means not all modems will work with all dsl. Even the same provider can change the dsl circuit and the old modem won't work, just had that happen to me on a client's dsl.

You're best bet is to find out what model your dsl provider recommends and then find out about that modem. Some providers offer different modems, and you might be able to get something better.

Well, apparently, this model does work with
BT - who are my ADSL ISP - so having said that,
it looks like it'll do the job?
