Replacing a protocol
Is it at all possible to substitute one's own protocol in place of an existing one, for example TCP?

Im not sure what your question is exactly so you might want to elaborate. however you dont have to use TCP/IP you can use proprietary protocols for example AOL uses proprietary protocols within its network that replace PPP and IP. Novell use to use IPX (now uses IP as default protocol ), Mac uses appletalk.
