Basic Ethernet network setup here. Hubs, Switches, all connected together with a pair of Domain Controllers (one of which I am sitting at) an Internet router with connected T1 and backup DSL connected to our Ethernet network through one of our switches. Obviously the router that connects us to the Internet would have the IP address that is connected with the defaut gateway. the question is, how can i get in to monitor that router? Since this is Win2k Server I have all the Administrative tools available and I have been playing around with the "Performance" and "Network Monitor" tools that come with the system. Is there anyway I can get into that router with the Performance tool? Also, is there some software that will let me monitor it either if the performance tool cannot or better than the performance tool? Specificly I want to monitor for CRC errors in the router.

You should be able to use any SNMP based tools such as PRTG. It's available on the net as a freeware.
Alternatively, you may use Windows tool 'snmputil' to periodically gather CRC error etc. information from the router. Hope this helps The Network Department |

ok, so if i'm not mistaken, my router should be synonamous with my default gateway. so is there some reason the PRTG software cannot connect to that router?

you must have snmp enabled on the router and both must be using the same community string as well usualy a firewall is your default gateway then the router ( most corporate setups that is)
