routing question
How do I know the maximum number of routers that can be recorded in an IP datagram if the timestamp option has a flag value of 1? ( IP version 4).
Thanks. |

I think you are asking how tracroute works? you refering to an ICMP TTL (time-to-live) value set to 1? it only goes one hop gets decremented to 0 and the recieving device sends back a "time exceeded" messages then it sends a value of 2 so it gets past the first router and decrements to 0 on the next hop, this keeps going until the destination host recieves on an invalid port (Default 33434), the host responds with ICMP "port unreachable" messages indicating an unreachable port. This event signals the traceroute program to finish.
