Setting up ADSL router

I just bought a Es-Link KCE2000R ADSL router. It has web based management to allow configuration; you have to go to http://10.0.0.2. Yesterday I could access the web management thing, and then it stopped working, I may have messed up some settings somewhere, either in the router or my computer. The problem is I cant get my computer to detect the IP settings for the router, something to do with DHCP I think. I'm running winXP.

New to this networking game, getting rather stressed, please help!

-Cuzza

If you can't access the web-based interface, use the reset button on the router to reset its settings back to defaults. It should then be available from the original address of http://10.0.0.2.

Once you've got it back, you need to go to the web-based interface and check that the DHCP server is enabled. Once the DHCP server is enabled, open up the properties for your network connection and double click on the Internet Protocol TCP/IP. Then, make sure that you select the option Obtain an IP address automatically.

Check the documentation on your router. I have yet to find one without some way to reset back to the factory settings.

That's OK

I sorted that problem. Now that I can get into the management thing it should be OK. However, now I'm having a new issue: The router is telling me that my username and/or password are incorrect! They can't be cause I rang my ISP and they told me what it should be. What else could be causing this?

Some routers retain their default username/password until you overtly change it. Some REQUIRE you to change it first time through, generally to the username/password you chose for ISP access. That would be why your ISP told you that, but if you bumbled right through it sort of just hitting the ENTER key, you might have a little difficulty.

The router did NOT require me to change the username/password settings. I specifically changed them myself to the username/password my ISP gave me.

Well you need to find the reset button and reset them to factory defaults. Then you need to check the instruction manual for the default username and password.

I reset the router to its default settings, but there is no default username/password; the fields are blank. I ran the 'diagnostic test' option in the router interface and the same test keeps failing, this is what I got:

Diagnostic Test

Checking LAN Connection
Testing Ethernet LAN connection : PASS HELP

Checking ADSL Connection
Testing ADSL Synchronization : PASS HELP

Checking Circuit 0 for Network Connection
Test ATM OAM Segment Loop Back : PASS HELP
Test ATM OAM End-to-End Loop Back : PASS HELP
Test Ethernet connect to ATM : PASS HELP
Test simple ppp session 0 PPP Layer connection : FAIL HELP
Test simple ppp session 0 IP connect to PPP : SKIPPED HELP

Testing Internet Connection
Ping primary DNS : SKIPPED HELP
Query DNS for www.conexant.com : SKIPPED HELP
Ping www.conexant.com : SKIPPED HELP

You can see "Test simple ppp session 0 PPP Layer connection" failed. When I click the help link I get:
Check PPP connection
This test returns PASS if your login name and password have passed authentication with your service provider.
If this test returns FAIL, run this test again a few minutes after this test is completed, especially if your PPP connection has just been inproperly disconnected. If this test consistently fails, first make sure your login name and password are correct, remember that login name and password are case sensitive.

This test returns SKIPPED if "PPPPOE connect to Ethernet" test does not return PASS and your DSL modem is configured as PPPOE encapsulation.

This test also returns SKIPPED if "Ethernet connect to AAL5" test does not return PASS and your DSL modem is configured as PPPOA encapsulation.

Do you know what kind of connection you have to your DSL server? PPPoE, PPTP or static IP etc? This is key in setting up the router. If you are required a user name and password it sounds like you have a PPPoE connection. Have you been connected to this service prior and just bought a new router? I will check a few things and get back, in the mean time I would call my ISP for any help they can give.

Exclamation

tiscali gave me these settings: -

PPPoA
VPI = 0
VCI = 38

authentication = VCMUX

authentication type = CHAP

modulation type = G.dmt

all these settings are correct with my modem but it still fails on the PPP LAYER CONNECTION test and then skips the next step

i looked at the diagnostics and it said: -
CHAP AUTHENTICATION FAILED
and
INVALID USERNAME or PASSWORD

i kno the username and password is correct as it worked fine with my last modem.

any ideas? because the tiscali staff arent really any use!!
thanks
ASH
