Switches & Routers
I have a gigabit switch with 2 PCs connected and a 10/100 router to share the Internet all plugged into the switch.
If I transfer files between the 2 PCs is my network going to move at the router speed or gigabit switch speed? |

it will move at the speed of the slowest port of the machines transferring data between - so if you had both machines in gigabit ports they will travel at gigabit speeds.
If one was in a 100mb one and the other in a gb one then they will travel at 100mb cause you can't go any faster than the slowest machine. Also, bear in mind that if either or both of the machines only have 100mb network cards, even if you are plugged into a gb port you will only get 100mb as well. The plugging in the router wouldn't cause the whole switch to drop down to 100mb cause each port in the switch would auto negotiate to the speed of the device plugged into it. |

Thanks. I thought the router for the shared Internet connection would cause the switch speed to drop. Both machines have gigabit cards.
