Trouble setting up SIMPLE Win2K network! Pls. help!!!
We have four systems running Windows 2000 Server.
We want to connect these 4 systems together via a hub, assign specific IPs to each system and make them part of the same domain (e.g. home.domain.com). Also one of the systems can function as a DNS server so that a request for URL goes to this *new* DNS server, gets resolved into an IP and is routed to one of the 4 machines (as specified by the DNS). Note: This is an alienated, 4 system network - it is NOT connected to any other network. Question is: How do we go about doing this?! Do we simply connect them all to the same hub, and....and then what? I'm new at this...pls. help! Thanks. |

Firstly, connect all the computers to the hub.
Then, on each computer, set their IP address statically. In Network and Dial-up Connections in the Control Panel, right-click the Local Area Connection and select Properties. Double click Internet Protocol TCP/IP and enter in a static IP address. Most home networks use something like 192.168.0.x. Enter the subnet mask of 255.255.255.0. Then decide which computer is going to be the DNS server. On it, open up Add / Remove programs from the Control Panel and select Windows Components. Find the DNS server and install this. Once DNS is installed, open the DNS manager from the Administrative Tools on the start bar. In the DNS manager create a new forward lookup zone, and enter the domain home.domain.com. When the forward lookup zone is complete, in the right-hand section of the screen, you can right-click and add a new A host. Enter the name, such as "www" and enter in the IP address of the server you want it to resolve to. Finally, on each computer, you need to open up the properties for the LAN connection, and set the primary DNS server to the IP address of the computer which has DNS installed. HTH, Edwin |
