Why wont this on board network card work?

I have a realtek RTL 8139 Family PCI Fast Eithernet NIC onboard 10/100 network and a laptop with onboard nic, well the laptop will connect to my other laptop with this same cross over cable i use when i try to connect it to my desktop. but why is it that I cannot get these two to connect togeather? the desktop has XP Pro, and the nic is enabled, and the icon shows its disconnected and in BIOS it is enabled and the driver has no problems, and all the services in XP are started, so wtf? Shoot me!

Also the desktop has worked at lan parties before. I've uninstalled the hardware, restarted the pc and reinstalled it still with the same results

Double check that you are using a crossover cable. Make sure there aren't any loose connections in the cable and in the RJ45 socket on the computer. You say the NIC has worked at LAN parties before, but is it possible for you to test this again, to confirm that the hardware is still working.

unfortunately I dont have a router or anything nearby to test it with. its all 1 state away at my other home.

and I made the cross over cable myself, it works between the 2 laptops but not the desktop/laptop

What speed are you trying to run the network at? If you're using 100Mbps perhaps try reducing this to 10Mbps to see if this makes a difference.

Are you still getting the error message saying that the cable is disconnected?
