I have two pcs connected by Ethernet cables to a Zoom ADSL X5 Router/Firewall/Modem they are Win2000pro and WinXP. These machines access the internet and can access eachothers shared files fine. Also connected to the router is a USRobotics Wireless Access point of which a laptop (WinXP) and another pc (also WinXP) connect to. Now both wirelessly connected machines access the internet fine and can ping the Access Point and Router but are completely unable to share files and access shared files and also unable to ping the two machines connected by wires.
I use the ip range 10.0.0.* and use TCP/IP protocol only. Any ideas on how to get filesharing worknig well and good (The automatic set up just doesnt help at all)? |

Have you tried accessing the various computers with their IP addresses (i.e. \\10.0.0.5\share)? Does that work?
And, can the two wireless-connected computers share files with each other? Colin

I'm using the WinXP pc on wireless and I've accessed the wired Win2000Pro machine using \\10.0.0.8\c$. Failed to access the wireless laptop XP using \\10.0.0.9\ but this isn't really needed. I've just installed SP2 on this pc and I can now ping the machine downstairs, seems like Microsoft done something good. Im now booting up the other wired machine to test this.

Ive tried getting to the Wireless XP PC from Wired 2000 using \\10.0.0.25\ but failed. This machines IP is static and all others are dynamic, could this be a cause?

I can access both Wired machines using the \\10.0.0.*\ but not the other wireless laptop, but I'm actually unsure to whether I set up sharing on that and am currently unable to check (it's in use by someone else).
Both wired machines cannot ping (or access) this machine although I can ping them as well as access them now. |

That won't be the cause, unless your DHCP server (presumably your router?) is assigning that static IP to another computer. It's best to keep netblocks all static or all dynamic, anyway.
The problem doesn't have anything to do with the fact that some computer are wired and some aren't, so long as the access point isn't playing with NetBIOS packets, which it shouldn't be doing in the first place. I assume you've already double-checked network settings. How about the security settings on your shares? Colin |

All users on all machines use same username and password. Zonealarm is on Wired-XP and Win2000 and laptop, McAfee Security Suite 2004 on this (Wireless-XP).
Anything else? |

Ooops, I doubled checked all firewall settings and found McAfee wasn't trusting the local network, click that and now two other pcs can see my files, I can see theirs. Now just need to get a good look at that laptop when it stops being used.
Many thanks for your help Colin. |

Ahh, firewalls, how they do get in the way!
