Wierd networking problem
I have a number of machines behind a router, all of the machines use the router as the default gateway. all of the machines are on the same subnet. you can traceroute from any machine to another and it shows a direct connection (not via the router) however.. when i drop the router none of the machines can talk to each other and they all run slow.
anyone any ideas ? |

Are you turning the router off? Aren't the computers connected to the router? So surely turning the router off would stop all communication between the computers on the network. |

nope they are in a hub plugged into the main router.
pcs *should* only use the default gateway to contact a machine on another subnet/network. |

Is the router running DHCP that the PC's use?

no this is running on a windows server also on the network.
(same subnet into the same hub etc) |

So when you turn off the router, they all still have good IP addresses?
Can they ping each other? |

yep they still have good IP addresses but they cant ping eachother.. exchange clients loose connection to the server and the machines seem to freeze

Sounds like a DNS name resolution issue to me. Could be causing a broadcast storm which feels like a freeze. Can't ping can also be a indication of this.
Is the server on this subnet running dns/wins? Where is it gettings its dns information from? Is it clients only connected to this hub? Perhaps replacing with a switch would solve the issue? |
