Win exp networking issue, please help
OS - Win XP professional
Both PCs connected via 4 port hub, I have file and printer sharing protocalls started on both PCs, both PCs also have the items I wanted to share "shared" I managed to get both computers succesfully sharing internet connections but not the File Transfers. I can see both PCs in the workgroup "MSHOME" But after I attept to click on the opposite PC I get the message: "Access Denied" contact network admin. I have tried most of the things I know, and even restarted both networks from scratch using the Wizard. No effect. Same problem Thnz |

Have you tried using an identical username/password on both computers?
Perhaps also try opening Windows Explorer, click Tools, Folder Options. In the View tab, scroll to the bottom and disable simple file sharing (untick the very last option). |

An inportant note XP pro with simple file sharring enabled acts just like XP home. With the exception of passing user information. If the everyone:r or :c account is not getting inherited by the file from your share folder you will not be able to access your share from another computer. Unless your accounts match. Also the cacls utility only works on NTFS partitions.
What is actually happening at the file level when you create a shared folder on the network with Win XP home or XP pro with simple file sharing enabled.? The everone:read or change permission is being applied to that folder and all files and folders inside that folder. That’s it. No smoke and mirrors simple! Why is this important? When a user on another computer asks to look inside that folder it needs an account with permission to enumerate (look at) the permission database (I'm keeping it simple here)Because there is no way from another computer to pass XP home account information it simply uses the everyone has access permission. Ok so why isn’t it working. Well this can get tricky. The first thing you should do is create a simple text file inside your shared folder. Why because in XP home there is no way of looking at folder permissions. But we can look at file permissions that get inherited from the shared folder. After creating a txt file open a cmd prompt and navigate to your shared folder then use the cacls utility to look at the permission being applied to that file. If the everyone:r or :C, if you gave the folder write permission is present your file sharing is working. At least at the permission level. If the everyone:r or :c is not there something is wrong. And turning on and off sharing at this level of your directory structure will still not work. The most likely cause is the account you are logged in with does not have the permission it needs to add the everyone account to that folder. Try creating another shared folder on the root of your c drive then again add the text file and check its permission. If the everyone account is still not getting applied remove file and print sharing. Reboot and then add it again. Test again. If it is still not working good luck. Could be a re-install of windows. Ok so what if the everyone account is there. Well then you should start looking at network, Firewall or connectivity issues. |
