Win2k Server in Workgroup

I've got a home LAN running through my ADSL router, until recently all machines were running win2k pro.

I have just added a win2k server to the workgroup, I can do everything I want from the server; browse the internet and shares on the other machines. I am also able to RAdmin to the other machines from the server.

Trouble is that my other machines are unable to see the server or any shares it contains, nor can they RAdmin to it, they can however ping it.

Somebody suggested it may be that netbios over tcp/ip is not enabled on the server does this sound right. I am unable to check the settings on the server at the moment (RAdmin doesn't work). I can confirm however that my other machines on the LAN do have netbios over tcp/ip enabled.

Regards

Paul

Firstly, try enabling NetBIOS like you have already been told.

Secondly, perhaps there is an authentication problem. On the server, try creating some more user accounts which share exactly the username and password as the user account from the 2000 pro computer which you're using to access the computer. See what happens if you try to access the computer then. Also, if you type in \\computername in the address bar of one of the clients, do you get an error messages?

Thanks for the assistance.....

I think the problem is sorted, I did a //192.168.7.5/c$ from the win2k pro machines and now it shows up in my network places etc. RAdmin is also working.

Slightly different issue now though, if I look in the system log in event viewer I get the following warning:

Unable to create the symbolic link for \Device\Serial1.

Any ideas?

Regards

Paul

Glad you got things working

That other problem doesn't sound like a networking issue to me, more like a hardware issue. Try posting the question in the hardware forum.
