Hi, this is the proverbial "my buddies PC don't work" thread.
he's running 98SE with IE6 and I just put a new modem in there for him cause his old AMR one died. I put a nice Diamond SupraExpress PCI one in and it dials-up just fine. However, IE can't find any sites. We get DNS errors. I tried Ping and can Ping IP addresses but when I Ping www.bbc.co.uk for example I get "Host does not exist" error messages. IPCONFIG /all shows DNS server entries and lots of other stuff but I don't know what I'm looking for. Also Mailwasher can't allocate sockets and Outlook doesn't work either (can't remember what it said). Is this a Name resolution problem? If so how do I fix it? There are TCP/IP and Dial-up networking installed so far. Does he need anything else? I hate 98 and dial-up hope you guys can help (and that I'm in the right forum). |

Can you access http://66.102.9.104 from the computer?

Hi Ed,
nope he can't get to Google that way in his browser either. But as mentioned already, he can ping 66.102.9.104, but can't ping www.google.com. Someone told me the TCP/IP stack might be corrupted but didn't have time to elaborate yet. Does this sound likely to you? Cheers, John. |

Ah sorry, didn't see that you'd already said that in your first post.
If you can't ping domain names, but can access the IP address, it sounds more like a DNS issue to me. Perhaps double check that the DNS servers that are present are correct for your ISP (you may need to check on your ISPs website). If there's a problem with the TCP/IP stack, then perhaps reinstalling it will help. The following guide may be of use: http://customersupport.acd.net/admi...all%20tcpip.cfm |

No problem. Has it solved the connection issues though?
