Win98SE to Win2KPro PLEASE HELP
All...
Forgive me if this seems like a newb post but I am stumped and could really use some help. Decided the other day that I would try and network my 2 computers here at home together for file sharing purposes. Went out and bout two ethernet cards and a cat 5 crossover cable. Hooked everything up, lights are on, but no network. On the 98 system, all that appears in Network Neighborhood is "Entire Network" and upon clicking it, I get "Unable to browse the network, network is unaccesible" I understand that this message could be due to a sharing conflict, but I checked that out and there is no conflict and the card is not in slot 1. On the Win2k system I can open the "Entire Network" but nothing is listed. And when I search for the other computer, results come up as nothing. Both computers have unique names, both are in the same workgroup. Both have individual IP addresses assigned to them 191.168.10.1 and 191.168.10.2 A ping from the 98 system to the Win2k system renders the following: "Destination host unreachable" A ping form the Win2k system to the 98SE gives this: "Request Timeout" Another intersting fact is that I boutght the exact same card for both systems, but the Win2k system recognized is as: "Realtek RTL8139(A)-based PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter" And the 98SE system recognized it as: "HP EN1207D-TX PCI 10/100 Fast Ethernet Adapter" File sharing is enabled on both. I am about at whits end on this, I am trying to provide as much information as possible for any and all help. I've been up all night reading up on info and tyrying to configure but nothing seems to work.. Any insight would be GREATLY appriciated.. Thanks! There are connection issues i have seen it the past. Ensure TCP/IP is running on both as opposed to NETBEUI. (Long since i used widows 98, so i hope this helps.) |

Yes I do have TCP/IP running on both instead of NETBUI. I even tried to go the NETBUI route after TCP/IP wouldn't work and still no luck.
Been to the MS website for troubleshooting. No help so far. I've done everything right as far as I know and still no luck. Starting to get aggrivating. I'm about to just switch my 98SE computer to Win2KPro as well, but I dont want to lose the programs on there as I dont have the original disks for them. *sigh* Thanks for the thought though! Shawn |

Win98SE to Win2KPro PLEASE HELP
Not sure whether you still need help on the above issue.
Just some pointers... Did you ensure the correct cable was used and is the cable working? Have you tried to re-install the drivers for both NICs? Can use access from one terminal to another using the following approach? Go to your Internet Explorer (IE) Enter "\\" w/o the quote Enter the other computer's name or IP address Hope this helps. ![]() |

1. I would be inclined to say either leads or nic drivers.
2. if you do an upgrade rather than clean install W2k will keep your programs. JonO |
