Unhappy Windows 2000 Network problem - please help

I have just two workstations, both running windows 2000 professional. Both workstations have antivirus software and software firewalls (Mcaffee on one and Zone Alarm on the other).I have a cable modem, and I bought a router, Linksys. I hooked up the router and then made sure that I could access the internet from the "main" computer. I accessed the internet fine. I then checked the other system, and I was able to access the internet. Great, so far. I then wanted to share files across my two computers. I enabled file sharing, and with hesitation, enabled netbios over tcp/ip. My router is dhcp, yet I have my two workstations as static, so that I can keep track of who is on the network. I thought maybe I should change my workgroup name because I had set the workgroup prior to "networking" the two computers together and that was the reason I could not see the other computer. So, I changed the workgroup on both stations, and rebooted. Once it had rebooted, I then doubled click on my network, and I received an error "The list of servers for this workgroup are currently unavailable." Now, not only can I not access my files from another computer I can no longer access the internet from both workstations. On both workstations, I can ping each workstation, the gateway and DNS servers. Please help, if I cannot share the files I just want to have internet access again.

If you have a hardware firewall/router I would suggest turning off the firewall's for each machine. This will block traffic.

I had shutdown the firewalls on both machines, and I was still unable to share folders or internet access. In all, the problem still exists.

I am sorry, I forgot to mention that I placed my computer's IP addresses in my firewall as trusted.

The firewalls for both computers have been disabled and the computers are still unable to see each other?
Can you post the results of ipconfig /all for each computer?

I am not in front of my computer right now, but I will post my ipconfig later. however, I did want to make note, that I have no clue what I did - I think it just recylced through, but when I performed a net view on one of the computers I was able to see the other computer. I was still unable to access it, but at least I could see the other computer. When I performed the net view from the other I received an error.

FYI: Also when I performed a nbtstat -c on both computers there was nothing in cache.

Again, I really do not care about sharing files right now, I just want my internet access back for both computers. Is there a configuration problem, that I am just missing. I was trying to 'start over" and tried to go back to the way it originally was set up, without success I still cannot access the internet from the 2nd computer, yet I can ping each computer from both workstations along with the gateway and DNS servers. I really do not have anything loaded onto my 2nd computer, so I was thinking about reinstalling windows 2000 and starting on a clean slate. I know it is drastic, but a network issue between 2 computers should not be so time consuming.

By the way, I performed the net view when my firewall was up for both machines and down. I recv'd the same response whether or not my firewall was active.

Yes, before I X'd out my gateway both machines are looking at the same gateway and DHCP server. I am running a router with a built in firewall. Yes, I can ping the router and each machine from both computers.

Smile

Okay, I now have internet access on both computers. For the computer that would not access the internet I went into my LAN settings and uninstalled client for microsoft networks. After I uninstalled, I rebooted. Once I rebooted, I was able to access the internet with and without my firewall on. Thus, I am now happy. I will try to share a folder on my computer(s), wish me luck!!
