Windows 98 networking DB? Huh?

This a new one for me: Is it true that a Win98/Me machine keeps a database of networked computers/shares stored on it, and that it can take up to five days for it to dump its DB? I think I was given some BS about this DB, but wanted to see if it was true. Anyone know?

Here is what happened.

The setup is half Windows 98 machine and half Windows XP machine. Both use a Networked Attached Storage device to share information. Recently, the NAS firmware was upgraded and now the Win98 machine can no longer access the NAS mapped drive, nor access it in network neighborhood. The Win98 machine can FTP to it just fine, but just can't access it from network neighborhood. I beleive it to be a firmware problem where they turned off NetBios since WinXP doesn't use it and it can still access it just fine; aslo because it can FTP into it by using either the device name or IP is another reason why it should access it just fine. Also, because it gives me a dialog box of saying I must provide a password for \\computername\\IPC$ which usually means something on the other computer hasn't started yet. (typing in a password, same as on machine and NAS results in same error).

Sounds more like a security issue. XP has security and 98 doesn't. Why aren't you contacting the NAS provider? They should have the answsers.
