Windows XP and Windows 98 LAN
Hello, i wonder if someone could help me. I would like to set up a LAN between my Windows XP Computer, and my Dad's Windows 98 Computer. The Network will have an internet connection, provided by my Win Xp Computer. I have gone through the stuff like installing the NIC's, connecting the Ethernet cable, and ran the setup wizard on my computer. I set my comp name as HOST and the workgroup as HOMELAN. When prompted I inserted a Floppy disk and the Network setup disk was created for me to use on the windows 98 pc. I inserted the disk, ran netsetup.exe, it installed some things and prompted to restart. When it loaded again the Network Setup Wizard loaded, and i enter the computer name as GUEST and the workgroup name, once again, as HOMELAN. After restarting both computers, I tried finding a shared folder from the windows 98 computer but was unable to find anything (maybe i was looking in the wrong place :S), i also dont see "My Network Places" on my start menu. On the windows 98 pc, i go into network neighbourhood (maybe im doing this wrong too?), and see icons for Entire Network, and Guest. Guest simply takes me to about 6 shared printers and a shared hard drive (from the windows 98 pc). I then went into the Entire Network, then Homelan, and all that was there, was the same contents that were on the original network neighbourhood screen. I can see no trace of anything from my windows xp computer. I am unable to connect to the internet on windows 98 computer either, Evidently something is wrong but i don't know what. Any help or solution to my problem would be very much appreciated.
Thank you |

Firstly, it'd be a good idea to check that your two computers have the correct IP addresses. Open a Command Prompt (or MS-DOS Prompt on Windows 98) and type "ipconfig /all > C:\ipconfig.txt" (without the quotes). Then, copy the contents of the C:\ipconfig.txt file into your next post for each computer. I just want to check that the Ip address, subnet mask, DNS server, default gateway etc have been set correctly.

Right... that's useful information.
You'll see that the Windows XP computer has a local IP address of 192.168.0.1 (in addition to the external one connected to the Internet which is set to 81.178.123.234). However, on the Windows 98 computer, the IP address has been automatically assigned to 169.254.216.230. This is not on the same subnet as the Windows XP computer. So, go to the Windows 98 computer and edit the network settings. Set the following details. IP Address: 192.168.0.2 Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0 Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1 Then, see if you can ping between the computers in both directions. |

1. I can't remember exactly where the setting is on the Windows 98 computer. I think if you open the Control Panel, there's a Network section. Open that, and I think you'll see sections for IP address, gateway etc.
2. To ping between them, open a command prompt (or MS-DOS prompt on Windows 98) and type "ping 192.168.0.x" (without the quotes) and change x to make it into the Ip address of the other computer. Check that you get a response, then go to the other computer and try pinging the other address and check that you also get a response. |

Do you have any firewalls installed on the computers? If you do, disable these for the time being. Also check that the firewall built-in to Windows XP isn't enabled.

If you've given the details for the Windows 98 computer like I said in post 4, then see if the Internet works. If it doesn't, can you tell me whether or not you can browse to http://66.102.9.104.

That means you've got a DNS problem. Go to the website for your ISP and you should be able to find a list of their DNS servers. Once you have these, go to the properties for your NIC and add them as the DNS servers. Then, the Internet should work fine. |
