Windows XP LAN connection - very strange

I have a computer that has been having problems with it's network connection.

The LAN connection comes up as "Network cable unpluged" for a second or two, and then goes away, and the connection shows it is Enabled for a few seconds, then back to "Network cable unplugged". It does this continuously. I tried pinging some websites, nothing comes up. ipconfig /release & renew both say "No operation can be performed when the media is disabled". I tried doing a system restore to the previous day when things were fine. This didn't solve the problem.

Has anyone encountered anything like this before? Please provide your input.

Yeah I had the same thing...more then once (ICT engeneer)

In all cases it was either a damaged networking cable, a cable/adsl modem that needed resetting, a router that needed resetting or a damaged networking card...

So if I where you I'd do the following:

Check and unplug the router/switch/cable modem/adsl modem/ whatever more you can think of that is related to the network...then plug them back in.

Then change your cable

Then try another networking card

If all that doesnt help, try to remove, reboot, reinstall all networking components. Starting with protocols and ending with your NIC's driver. (since it worked I don't think it's a driver issue)
