Windows XP shared Dialup, loss of connection on "back end" of network.

Here's the scenario:

1 system, WinXP with dialup and shared connection and a NIC.
1 system, WinXP with NIC.

For a couple years this setup has worked flawlessly. Recently, seemingly after installation/removal of Norton Internet Security on the back end system, I am having problems with connecting to the internet.

Here's what happens:
Run the home/office network setup wizard on both systems, with dialup first, mine after. Internet works until disconnect and reconnect. SOMETIMES it will persist, but it seems that almost every time the internet discon's, I lose connectivity on the back end system until I run the wizard on BOTH systems again. Sometimes I even have to reboot both systems before the problem is solved.

Now, when the internet problem occurs, I can still ping 192.168.0.1 but I cannot connect to the internet.
I have yet to figure out exactly why I the connection keeps being lost.

Oh, on another note. The connection works fine wether the WinXP firewall is enabled or not, and sometimes it will stop working if the firewall is disabled on the dialup system. (I was using Norton on that system but it began to cause serious performance issues and I wound up removing it. This problem has started since I removed the software, but in the interim, I installed Norton Internet Security on my system to make sure that was causing the performance issues. After figuring out that it was, I removed it from my system and the other system as well. Now I have this problem.)

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Update

Still having problems with this issue. I have recently run ipconfig and netstat to try and check a few things, as well as hitting Edwin's xxx.xxx... link to google. When the network drops my link, sometimes I can hit the xxx.xxx link, other times I cannot. Even when I can, I cannot seem to refresh the DNS server to allow myself to view the internet normally. When I cannot hit the xxx.xxx link, I do a network setup on the other system and it sometimes fixes it, sometimes not.

This issue is very baffling and seemingly related to Norton Internet Security install/uninstall. If anyone can offer any suggestions as to what may be causing this issue, please post. Anything at all. I'm getting tired of this mess.

Thanks in advance,

Not at all sure about this, but perhaps you may be able to use system restore to put the system back to a working state. Other than this, all I can really suggest is a reinstall XP networking or a complete reinstall of windows.
